Best women's gym leggings: 2026 buying guide

You can tell good gym leggings from the very first squat: they do not slip down, they do not go see-through and they do not distract you from your workout. You can tell bad ones too. In this buying guide we go point by point through what to check on a product page to get it right first time.

1. Opacity: they must pass the squat test

This is point number one. When you squat, the fabric stretches to the max, and that is where thin leggings show what you do not want. Look for leggings described as squat-proof or opaque and, if you can, check them in front of a mirror in good light. We explain it in depth in non see-through gym leggings.

2. Fabric composition and weight

Two details in the spec sheet tell you a lot about quality:

  • Composition: blends of nylon (polyamide) with a good percentage of spandex (elastane) offer 4-way stretch, recovery and a soft feel. For example, our Essential Pocket leggings are 75% nylon and 25% spandex.
  • Fabric weight (GSM or g/m²): indicates the density of the fabric. A fabric of around 230 GSM offers a good balance between opacity, support and breathability.
LEGGIFY tip: if a brand does not state composition or fabric weight, be wary. Transparency in the details usually goes hand in hand with product quality.

3. A high waist that stays up

A high waist supports your tummy, flatters your shape and, above all, stays in place when you jump, run or deadlift. A wide, double-layer waistband is ideal. More in our guide to high-waisted leggings.

4. Flat seams or seamless fabric

Poorly made seams rub, open up and eventually break. There are two quality options:

  • Flat seams (flatlock): they lie smooth on the inside and do not rub. That is what the Essential Pocket leggings have, with 4-needle, 6-thread stitching.
  • Seamless fabric: the garment is knitted in one piece, feels like a second skin and allows push-up patterns like the one on LEGGIFY Sculpt. We explain it in seamless leggings: what they are and their benefits.

5. Side pocket: the detail that changes everything

If you take your phone to the gym or go running, a well-placed side pocket frees you from bum bags and armbands. Make sure your phone fits and does not bounce. We tell you everything in leggings with pockets for the gym and running.

6. Choose by type of training

Frequently asked questions

Which leggings don’t go see-through at the gym?

Those made from dense fabric, with a good proportion of spandex and a weight of around 230 GSM or more. Look for the squat-proof label.

Is it better with seams or seamless?

It depends on what you are looking for: seamless for a push-up effect and second-skin feel; flat seams for maximum durability and extras like pockets.

How many pairs of leggings do I need for training?

If you train 3-4 days a week, with 2 or 3 pairs you can rotate them and wash them gently, which extends their lifespan.

Which colour is the most versatile?

Black goes with everything and is slimming. For a different look, petrol green, grey or lavender are safe bets. Outfit ideas in gym outfits.
